During the week of Aug. 14-20, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. One of the drivers was younger than 21.

During the week of Aug. 14-20, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. One of the drivers was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; Puna, six; South Hilo, five; and Ka‘u, one.

So far this year, there have been 727 DUI arrests compared with 666 during the same period last year, an increase of 9.2 percent.

There have been 840 major accidents so far this year compared to 902 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.9 percent.

So far this year, there have been 23 official traffic fatalities compared with 15 official fatalities for the same time period last year. This represents an increase of 53.3 percent for official fatalities.

There also have been four vehicle-related deaths police don’t count toward the official total because two occurred on private property and two in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
